Are There Insurance Lessons In TV Series “The Walking Dead”?

A Personal Insurance Update

The AMC TV show, The Walking Dead, has captured the interest of many of us.  It is still one of the most popular shows on TV.  While the chances of zombies roaming around an apocalyptic State of Georgia are remote, there are still many things we can learn from the show.

Depending on your coverage, chances are your homeowner’s insurance would cover a zombie attack.  If you have questions about other catastrophic coverage like floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, or loss due to ice or snow, call our office.

So, what real-life lessons can our zombie-battling friends on The Walking Dead teach us?   Here are a few.

  • Plan for disasters by having a plan. Make sure all family members know how to get out of the house in the event of a fire.
  • Stock up on non-perishable food items.  It is a good idea to have at least a week’s worth of food in case you are stuck at home.
  • Put together an emergency kit.  It should include one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, a weather radio, a flashlight, batteries for your radio and your flashlight (plus extras), a first-aid kit, a whistle so you can signal for help, moist towelettes, garbage bags and ties (for personal sanitation), and a manual can opener.
  • Have emergency contact information loaded in everyone’s cell phone.

It is good to know that we do not have to worry about zombies for now, but there are many other disasters for which we need to be prepared.

Pumpkin Carving Safety Tips

There’s no better way to celebrate Halloween than by carving up jack-o’-lanterns with the family and friends. This season, save the gore for your favorite scary Halloween movies and take precautions with these simple tips.

This Halloween, keep these safety tips in mind when you’re carving your pumpkin masterpiece:

TRIA orthopedic surgeon Yvonne Grierson, MD shares these tips:

  1. Pick the right pumpkin – Select a pumpkin that has a smooth surface and is light in weight.
  2. Carve in a clean, dry, well-lit area  Be sure to wash and thoroughly dry all the tools you will use. Any moisture on your hands or table could cause slipping, which may lead to injuries.
  3. Always use adult supervision  Let the adults or older children do the carving. Kids can still get involved with the process by helping pick out the pattern, drawing the pattern and cleaning out the inside of the pumpkin.
  4. Use the right tools or pumpkin carving kit – Kits include a small serrated pumpkin saw that typically work better than a sharp knife. A sharp knife is not always better because it may become wedged in the thick pumpkin tissue, requiring force to remove it. Injuries from a sharp knife are more likely to cause a deep penetrating cut.
  5. Get help for an injury – If you cut your finger or hand, bleeding from minor cuts will often stop on its own by applying direct pressure. If continuous pressure does not slow or stop the bleeding after 15 minutes, an emergency room visit may be required.

We offer a multitude of personal insurance options for individuals and families. Our personal coverages include; homeowners, renters, automobiles, motorcycles, boats, recreational vehicles, snowmobiles, flood, life insurance, and much more.

Why Consider Umbrella Insurance?

A small businessman stands looking up on a red open umbrella offered by a giant male hand. Unexpected assistance. Business support. Corporate insurance.

You’ve worked hard to earn your lifestyle. Consider adding additional liability protection to your Florida area Auto, Home, Renters or Condo policy. Personal Umbrella Liability coverage added to your other policies can protect you, your spouse and any relatives living in your home for $1 million or more.

Umbrella Protection

Umbrella Insurance provides extra protection or limits above the liability insurance you currently have. Just as an umbrella protects you from heavy rain, an umbrella insurance policy protects you from losing the entirety of your wealth and assets in the event of a claim. Umbrella insurance can provide limits above your business insurance, personal auto and home policies.

Florida umbrella insurance provides broad insurance beyond traditional insurance. It provides additional liability coverage above the limits of your primary insurance policies. It can also provide coverage for claims that may be excluded by the primary policies

It is true that personal umbrella insurance may not be for business or individual, but if you are a business, wanting to protect your company’s resources, building financial resources for your future, are a professional, own your home, boat or recreation vehicle, you should consider an umbrella insurance policy.  Having the added protection of an umbrella insurance policy is coverage no one should go without. Call us today, for a free review.

High Net Worth Individuals

Do you own a boat, second home or have other expensive toys? Often high net worth individuals need higher liability limits to protect personal assets. A simple rule is, the more you own the greater risk you may have of losing it. The nice thing about an umbrella policy is that it is competitively priced. Usually, it costs about $300 per year for each $1,000,000 increment of insurance that you buy, and it can bring you great piece of mind.

Florida Life Insurance Update

Use An Agent To Shop For You – We will Shop, Compare, and Bargain.  Once you have decided on the type of coverage you need, don’t just sign up for the first plan that crosses your path. Let us review the options and terms so you make an educated decision. This will help you to get the greatest coverage at the lowest possible price.

Opt for Term Life Insurance – The quickest way to lower your life insurance premium is to opt for a Term Life Insurance policy instead of a whole-life policy. The idea is to keep insurance as what it is, and not turn it into an investment product. Thus, you can get yourself insured under a Term Life policy at a fraction of the cost of a whole-life scheme with typically the same coverage amount. However, do not forget that Term Life Insurance covers you only for a pre-defined period of time.

Keep yourself Fit – Be a low risk proposition for your insurance provider by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and keeping yourself free from addictions such as smoking, drugs, and alcohol. A good health record will result in considerable reduction in your life insurance premiums.

Consult an Independent Insurance Agent – To reduce your life insurance premium, the easiest thing you can do is to consult a good Insurance agent. Since the agent will be a pro in the insurance marketplace, he/she would be able to get you to the most affordable deal in line with your coverage requirements. A good independent insurance agent will compare different market rates for you and will also negotiate the best rates on your behalf.

Start at a young age – Insure yourself at a young age. Life insurance premiums at a young age are only a fraction of what they will be when you are well into your middle-age. The premise is young and healthy people are the lowest risk segment. The low mortality risk is a great incentive for insurance companies to insure you at lower premiums

Home Security Innovations

There is no question; not only has technology made our lives easier, but it is also keeping us safer and helping to keep insurance premiums lower. Let’s look at few ways technology has helped with your homeowner’s insurance.

These technologies can help lower your homeowner’s insurance cost. Many of these can be controlled through your smart phone, which gives you control no matter where you are.

Geofencing. This emerging security technology gives peace of mind by creating a virtual bubble around your home. When you’re out of the security bubble, you’ll default to “away” mode. If there’s movement within the bubble while you’re away, you’ll get a push notification.

Smart Plugs or Outlets – Smart plugs, also known as smart outlets, can provide peace of mind if you wonder whether you remembered to unplug the coffee pot or the iron before you left home.

Sprinkler Systems – Home fire sprinkler systems are becoming very common in larger homes, and many new building codes require them in some homes. These systems are designed for new construction, but retrofitting costs are coming down as technology improves.

Leak detection systems for water heaters and gas lines – Many of today’s home security systems are designed to detect leaks, furnace failures, and other common household problems.

Smart Locks. No more worrying about forgetting to lock the door. With a tap of your mobile device, you can lock and unlock your home from anywhere. You can also program smart locks to automatically lock whenever you leave your home — reducing the chance of an incident.

RV Insurance 101

Class C Motorhome ( Rear ) – Campsite. Class C Recreational Vehicle. Recreation Photo Collection.

You probably bought your motor home or travel trailer because it offers the best of both worlds: the ability to explore the world we live in and the convenience of your home each night when you pull over. Motor homes and travel trailers offer a freedom and joy that’s unique regardless of the size of coach or fifth wheel you explore with.

But with this dual benefit also come some increased risks. As a vehicle, your motor home needs some auto-type insurance to protect you from crashes, medical costs and the like while you’re driving on the road. But comprehensive rv insurance needs to also protect you when you have stopped and camped. That means you need insurance closer to what you find in a homeowner’s policy that includes features such as:

Personal liability:

Protection in case someone is injured in or around your RV

Personal property:

Enhanced property insurance that will protect the contents of your RV in case of theft or damage.

Additional living expenses:

Protection that helps pay for your cost of living if you are displaced from your motor home.

Attached accessories:

Another layer of protection that covers your awning, tv antennas or other accessories that might be damaged.

Getting the right recreational vehicle insurance doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult with an insurance expert on your side.

Consider Vacation Liability coverage for when you stop driving and start using your recreational vehicle as a temporary residence. Some policies can include additional coverage for physical damage in Mexico.

Some policies include Roadside Assistance, which has you covered 24/7 in the event of a breakdown or accident. Some will even allow you to upgrade the coverage to include lodging, transportation, and meal coverage if needed.

Our claims service is available 24/7. In the event you have a loss, the insurance companies we work with have skilled claims teams who will work with you to get your RV repaired and back on the road.

Fire Up the Grill

There are many good reasons to have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, and here are a few more. In 2019, 18,500 people went to emergency rooms because of barbeque related accidents.  Sixteen percent of home structure fires involving a grill were caused during ignition because something flammable was too close to the grill.  Twenty percent of all reported grill fires were a result of leaks or breaks.  Gas grills account for more home fires overall than do charcoal grills.  Emergency rooms see the use of gasoline on a charcoal grill as the most common error associated with burn cases.

You might think you know all you need to know about barbeque safety and grilling, but here are some reminders.  We want your grilling experience to be fun and safe for the entire family.

General Grilling Safety

  • Never barbeque inside, in a garage, on the roof, or on a second story deck.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • If you are using a charcoal grill, let the lighter fluid soak into the coals a few minutes before lighting them so that any vapors have time to evaporate.  When you do light the coals, stand back.
  • Do not use lighter fluid on hot coals.
  • Open the grill lid before you light it
  • Do not wear loose fitting clothing.
  • Keep an extinguisher outside or close by.
  • Make sure you use the grill 10 feet away from your house.
  • Use the grill close to a water source.
  • Do not let raw meat sit out too long without being chilled or cooked.
  • Always wash your hands before and after handling food.
  • Do not over-indulge in alcohol while barbecuing.

A “high-risk” driver is generally defined by the auto insurance companies as someone who has a higher risk of having an auto accident. Auto insurance companies often see high-risk drivers as undesirable, as they may end up costing a great deal in claims.
