Personal Umbrella Insurance

Umbrella InsurancePersonal Umbrella Insurance

You’ve worked hard to earn your lifestyle. Consider adding additional liability protection to your Auto, Home, Renters or Condo policy. Personal Umbrella Liability coverage added to your other policies can protect you, your spouse and any relatives living in your home.

Umbrella Insurance Protection

Umbrella Insurance provides extra protection or limits above the liability insurance you currently have. Just as an umbrella protects you from heavy rain, an umbrella insurance policy protects you from losing the entirety of your wealth and assets in the event of a claim. Umbrella insurance can provide limits above your business insurance, personal auto and home policies.

Umbrella insurance provides broad insurance beyond traditional insurance. It provides additional liability coverage above the limits of your primary insurance policies. It can also provide coverage for claims that may be excluded by the primary policies

It is true that personal umbrella insurance may not be for business or individual, but if you are a business, wanting to protect your company’s resources, building financial resources for your future, are a professional, own your home, boat or recreation vehicle, you should consider an umbrella insurance policy.  Having the added protection of an umbrella insurance policy is coverage no one should go without. Call us today, for a free review.

High Net Worth Individuals

Do you own a boat, second home or have other expensive toys? Often high net worth individuals need higher liability limits to protect personal assets. A simple rule is, the more you own the greater risk you may have of losing it. The nice thing about an umbrella policy is that it is competitively priced and can bring you great piece of mind.

Be Aware of Fraud During Storm Recovery

Deep Flood Water

A Personal Insurance Update

As people are looking for help re-building after the storm, there will be those who will attempt to take advantage of the situation.  If you are recovering from a disaster, here are some things to think about:

Prevent Contractor Scams

  • Call your insurance Company first. They can refer a qualified, licensed professional to mitigate damages.  Many Companies have local vendors or their own remediation Company that will guarantee their work for 2 or more years.  NEVER sign anything without speaking with your Insurance Company.  This could transfer the rights of YOUR insurance policy to the contractor without your involvement.
  • Make sure all contractors are licensed and insured.
  • Check with your insurer to see if the contractor has provided work for them in the past.
  • Never pay in cash.
  • Always ask for a quote in writing.
  • If you must, only pay a small amount up front, but also use a credit card so you can challenge payment if needed.
  • Get referrals and check references.
  • Never sign a blank agreement.
  • Make sure the contractor is licensed.

Insurance Scams

Some people have already received fraudulent computer calls saying their home insurance has been cancelled and they need to make immediate payment by credit card.  Also, be aware of people who say they are adjusters representing your insurance company and you need to pay your deductible now in order to have your claims covered.  Call our office if you have any questions regarding your claims.

Charity Scams

Many scammers are out asking you to donate money to their charity. Make sure you donate to legitimate organizations.  Donate money to charities you know, such as The Red Cross or your local church.

Storm Update

Past storms in the Gulf of Mexico, such as Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, have emphasized the importance of homeowners securing flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). As you are aware, most locations in the City of Punta Gorda require the purchase of flood insurance as a condition of a mortgage. It is our belief, however, that all properties in the City of Punta Gorda are susceptible to damage from flood waters and property owners should protect themselves by purchasing flood insurance. Here are some reasons why:

The Flood Insurance Rate Maps do not take into account the vulnerabilities to storm These maps primarily look at rainfall flooding. The City of Punta Gorda is extremely vulnerable to storm surge. In fact, all residents in the City of Punta Gorda live in a storm surge zone. With the City of Punta Gorda having an average elevation of less than 10 Feet, this leaves a majority of our population vulnerable to storm surge even from a minor storm. It is very possible that residents in X Zones (are not required to have flood insurance), could experience flooding from a storm surge that could cause major damage to their home or business, and any contents contained in the structures. Many people living in zones that do not require the purchase of flood insurance have purchased flood insurance for the reason stated above.

Flood insurance covers any flood-related damages, whether the cause is from rainfall flooding, storm surge, sheet flow, or insufficient Homeowners insurance does not cover any damages caused from rising water, so purchasing flood insurance in the City of Punta Gorda is a very wise decision. With our vulnerabilities, it is best to have it just in case. Just as with your homeowner’s insurance – you do not buy it with the intent of having your home burn down or destroyed by a tornado. You do not buy automobile insurance with the intent of getting in an accident. You buy insurance to offset costs just in case something was to occur. Flood insurance is the same way. Without flood insurance, you run the risk of possibly having to spend an extraordinary amount of money to repair damages to your home caused by flooding. Do not misunderstand the flood threat here in the City of Punta Gorda. Everyone in the City of Punta Gorda should seriously consider having flood insurance.

Keeping flood insurance rates as low as possible has been a goal of many of us in City Government since we became a Community Rating System (CRS), participant. The City of Punta Gorda currently maintains a Class 5 rating which enables property owners within the County to receive a 25% discount on their flood insurance rates.

For answers to your floodplain questions or to request a copy of a FEMA elevation certificate, please contact the City of Punta Gorda Building Department at (941) 575 – 3324 or check our website at http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/government/building where you’ll find a wealth of information on flood insurance, special rules for building in the floodplain, and ideas for protecting your property from flood damage.

There Are Proven Ways To Reduce Your Auto Insurance Premiums

Auto Insurance

When it comes to purchasing auto insurance, having options can be a very important way to save money. Putting money back in your pocket is one of our primary goals.  We know and understand the auto insurance market.  This allows us to provide you with the best possible combination of pricing, coverage and service.

Auto insurance rates differ from company to company, so it really pays to have us shop your insurance. Some markets offer better rates for trucks, RV and campers, while others can offer better rates for motorcycles.

How to reduce your auto premium

There are many things you can do to keep your auto rates at the lowest level possible.

  1. Review your deductibles. According to the Insurance Information Institute, raising your deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce your Collision and Comprehensive costs.
  2. Encourage your student driver to get the best grades possible. Most major insurance companies offer a discount for students in good academic standing.
  3. Select a safe car. Check out which cars are popular with thieves and avoid them. Also, the more expensive the car, the higher the premiums.
  4. Be a safe driver. The more accidents and tickets you have, the higher the premiums will be.
  5. Purchase a car with an alarm or LoJack. LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System provides car owners with peace of mind knowing that if their vehicle is stolen, they have the best chance of getting it back.
  6. Be loyal. Many auto insurance companies offer loyalty discounts if you stay with them over time.
  7. Check for other auto insurance discounts. These might include taking safe driver courses, senior discounts and more.
  8. Some companies offer discounts for paying your premium in full, multi policy, and multi car discounts.

You might be able to pay less for your car insurance premium and not even know it. So it pays to connect with us to review your insurance needs.

Not So Common Insurance Coverage You Need

Young family who is getting insurance coverage

An Insurance Update

Many people think that all insurance policies are alike and there is no need to understand the different kinds of coverage afforded by different types of policies.  As professional agents, our job is to help our clients understand how the coverage we recommend can affect their risks and actually help them in the event of a loss.

We take the time to educate ourselves on your individual risks, and then design an insurance program to meet your needs.  Here are examples of four insurance coverage options that you should consider.  This coverage can apply to your home or business.

Business Income and Extra Expense (called loss of use on homes)

Business income insurance covers the loss of income that a business suffers after a covered loss, (fire, etc.), while its facility is shut down or in the process of being rebuilt.

Extra expense covers the additional costs, in excess of normal operating expenses, that an organization incurs to continue operations while its property is being repaired or replaced after having been damaged by a covered cause of loss.

For homeowners, the coverage will provide funds for temporary housing while your damaged home is under repair.

Equipment Breakdown (not often available for homes)

Equipment breakdown covers loss due to a mechanical or electrical breakdown of equipment, machinery, including photocopiers and computers.  Coverage applies to the cost to repair or replace the equipment and any other property damaged by the equipment breakdown.

Water/Sewer Backup

Most homeowner’s and business insurance policies do not cover sewer backup unless specific sewer backup coverage is added to the policy, according to the Insurance Information Institute.  A sewer backup can be caused by many factors (not including flood).  Sewer backup can happen from any number of sources:

  • plumbing or appliances
  • severe weather or storms
  • accidents
  • infiltration

Building Ordinance and Law

Building ordinance and law covers losses caused by enforcement of ordinances or laws regulating construction and repair of damaged buildings.  Many communities have building ordinances requiring that a building that has been damaged be rebuilt in accordance with current building codes rather than simply repaired.  This can cause considerable additional expenses to a loss.

Don’t Get Wet… Florida Boating Safety Tips

freedfcv5Summer is here and that means it is time to get out on the water.  We hope that you and your family have a great time.  But remember, your watercraft needs to be insured, and we can provide a full range of watercraft insurance products for you. Your boat will need insurance for watercraft liability, damage to the hull, and personal property.

Watercraft insurance policies can cover damage to your boat, motor, trailer, and personal effects in the boat.  Available coverage includes liability, medical payments, coverage for injury to a water skier, and damage to the boat itself, sometimes called hull coverage.  Availability varies by state and by insurance company.  Even though boat insurance premiums are low, shopping your rate can sometimes save a substantial amount.

Here are some things to think about before you take your watercraft out:

Watercraft Safety

  • Follow all safety rules. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 75% of reported water fatalities in 2014 happened on boats where the driver had not received boating safety training.
  • Be aware of weather conditions.
  • Have operable boat lights. Always test boat lights before the boat leaves the dock and carry extra batteries.
  • Never allow passengers to ride on gunwales, seatbacks, or outside of protective railings, including the front of a pontoon boat. A sudden turn, stop, or start could cause a fall overboard.
  • Follow speed laws around houseboats and docks.
  • Know your boat’s capacity and how to properly load it. An overloaded or improperly loaded boat can cause safety problems.
  • Have a working marine radio on board at all times and know how to use it.
  • Ventilate after fueling. Open the hatches, run the blower, and check for fuel fumes before starting the engine.
  • Infants and young children are at a higher risk for hypothermia, so if you are taking a baby on a boat, just take a few extra precautions to keep your baby warm.

Boat or Marine insurance is available for small boats, yachts, high performance powerboats, live-aboard houseboats, catamarans, and pontoons. Marine insurance will cover intended use including personal recreation, commercial, or charter vessels.
