Fire Up the Grill

There are many good reasons to have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, and here are a few more. In 2019, 18,500 people went to emergency rooms because of barbeque related accidents.  Sixteen percent of home structure fires involving a grill were caused during ignition because something flammable was too close to the grill.  Twenty percent of all reported grill fires were a result of leaks or breaks.  Gas grills account for more home fires overall than do charcoal grills.  Emergency rooms see the use of gasoline on a charcoal grill as the most common error associated with burn cases.

You might think you know all you need to know about barbeque safety and grilling, but here are some reminders.  We want your grilling experience to be fun and safe for the entire family.

General Grilling Safety

  • Never barbeque inside, in a garage, on the roof, or on a second story deck.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • If you are using a charcoal grill, let the lighter fluid soak into the coals a few minutes before lighting them so that any vapors have time to evaporate.  When you do light the coals, stand back.
  • Do not use lighter fluid on hot coals.
  • Open the grill lid before you light it
  • Do not wear loose fitting clothing.
  • Keep an extinguisher outside or close by.
  • Make sure you use the grill 10 feet away from your house.
  • Use the grill close to a water source.
  • Do not let raw meat sit out too long without being chilled or cooked.
  • Always wash your hands before and after handling food.
  • Do not over-indulge in alcohol while barbecuing.

Are You A High Risk Driver In Florida?

A “high-risk” driver is generally defined by the auto insurance companies as someone who has a higher risk of having an auto accident. Auto insurance companies often see high-risk drivers as undesirable, as they may end up costing a great deal in claims.

Why you may be defined as a high risk driver?

  • You have multiple accidents or tickets during a specific period of time.
  • You have a DUI.
  • You have a serious violation.
  • Any accident that results in a fatality.
  • Driving without a license.
  • Driving without insurance.
  • You drive an exotic car.
  • For whatever reason, your auto insurance has lapsed.

How to get auto insurance if you are considered high risk

  • You may need non-standard insurance.
  • SR-22 insurance for specific situations.
  • Allow your agent to shop auto insurance for you.
  • Determine what auto insurance discounts you may be eligible for.
  • Improve your driving skills.
  • Consider a lower risk car.

Is Damage to My Business Covered for Loss Resulting From a Riot?

The recent riots in most major cities has prompted us to provide some much needed information regarding commercial insurance and how it interacts with riots and unrest.

Generally speaking, damage to your building and other property due to a riot is a covered peril.  This would include fire, theft, and vandalism.  If you were forced to close your business by civil authority but had no building damage, you may be able to collect for lost revenue, depending on how your policy is written.  Remember, each policy is unique, so call our office for a review.

Property damage caused by rioting, civil commotion, and vandalism are covered under most standard commercial insurance policies.

Glass is usually part of covered property and built into base coverage, as long as it is part of a building or structure (i.e., store windows and plate glass on office fronts).  However, there may be a separate glass deductible.  In some cases, you may need to have a special glass endorsement for coverage to apply.

Businesses that are forced to shut down operations or limit hours due to rioting, vandalism, or civil commotion, and have coverage for the loss of income under business income insurance (also known as business interruption) should be covered.

What If the Fire Department Refuses to Put out the Fire?

Insurance companies generally will not deny a claim because the fire department pulled back for safety reasons.  If civil authorities limit or restrict access to a burning building, your insurance will not be jeopardized.

Final Thought

Each policy is unique and all losses are subject to your actual policy terms and conditions. Give our office a call to review your coverage. We are here to help you manage your risk.

Does Your Auto Insurance Cover Damage Done During a Protest or Riot?

Recently we have seen streets filled with vehicles damaged form rioters.  Damage can be a simple scratch, windshield damage, or even a fire.  The question is, “Are these kinds of losses covered under a standard auto policy?”

It is normal for people to be worried about their cars if they live in an area with active riots.  Insurance coverage that covers acts of vandalism is not part of the auto liability insurance.

According to the industry-backed Insurance Information Institute, this type of damage typically is covered under optional comprehensive insurance plans.  This coverage provides reimbursement for damage to the vehicle and its contents caused by fire, falling objects, vandalism or rioting.  Approximately two-thirds of policyholders have this coverage.  However, each policy is different so the actual coverage will depend on your individual auto policy terms and conditions.

A Few Things to Remember

  • If the damage is covered it will be subject to your policy deductible.
  • You should report the claim as soon as possible, especially if someone was injured.
  • Windshield or glass claims are often covered on a first-dollar basis with no deductible.  However, they can also contribute to increased rates.
  • Collision coverage may apply if the vehicle was moving during the time of the damage.

Florida Disaster Insurance

flash-731488_1920Can You Live Without Disaster Insurance?

Human caused disasters and natural disasters occur in every state. Florida has hurricanes and flooding, California has earthquakes and wild fires, Colorado has flooding and wildfires, the Northeast has winter storms and high winds, Florida has flooding and hurricanes, and the Midwest has flooding and tornados.

Homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures the home itself and the things you keep in it. Florida Homeowners insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by household pets.

Insurance And Disasters

It is safe to say that most business and homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover the risks associated with disasters. The only exception would be damage caused by wildfires. Let’s look at how insurance might apply to other disasters.

  1. Floods— Only 13% of U.S. homeowners had flood-insurance policies last year according to the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group. Flood insurance must be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program. We can help you if you need the coverage.
  2. Hurricanes— Most property insurance policies provide coverage for losses resulting from hurricanes, except for flood loss associated with the hurricane. If you live in a high wind area, you will need to have a separate policy to cover your home and personal property.
  3. Mudslides— A standard home insurance policy does not protect your home against damage caused by a mudslide. Mudslides are usually defined as ground movement. Heavy rains that cause a mudflow would typically be covered.
  4. Heavy Rain and Storms— Winter storms and snow damage is covered under a typical homeowner’s policy. If flooding occurs, then the flood damage would be covered.
  5. Hail— Most homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for losses resulting from hail.
  6. Wildfires— It can be safe to say that all homeowner’s insurance covers loss resulting from a fire. Wildfires are considered a fire and would be covered.

Coverage disclaimer–the information provided here is for general purposes only. It is not our intent to change or modify insurance coverage. Each insurance policy is different and your individual coverage will be determined by the terms of your insurance policy.

Has Your Business Considered These Insurance Coverages?

Yellow Safety Helmet On Workplace Desk With Construction Worker

Every business needs business insurance.  But business insurance policies are all different. That is why it is always better to use an independent agent who knows and understand your business and industry. The insurance needs for a restaurant are much different than the insurance needs of a manufacturer, and the coverage should reflect that.

If you own or operate a business, you may want to consider these coverages as part of your business insurance package. Our keys to coverage will assume some of the obvious coverage such as property and liability.  We also want to identify some business insurance coverage you may not have considered.

  • Sprinkler leakage insurance–If your sprinkler system leaks and causes a loss to equipment or documents, do you have coverage?
  • Business income insurance–After a covered loss, you may have a period of recovery time when you are closed. Without business income insurance your business may run out of funds.
  • Umbrella Insurance–An umbrella policy provides extra insurance protection over your commercial general and auto liability policies. It is not uncommon for a business to be sued for over $1,000,000.
  • Cyber liability–Cyber breaches are the fastest growing causes for loss for most businesses. Every business needs the protection provided by cyber insurance.
  • Employee dishonesty–This policy protects employers from workplace theft and fraud.

Find out how your business can be protected by calling us today for a free business insurance review. Our philosophy is to help you identify and control both your insurance dollars and potential claims.

By having an office in North and South Charlotte County, we can provide convenient and timely service to our clients. We would appreciate having the opportunity to serve as your insurance Agent for your personal and/or business needs.

Tips for Working at Home

blogging-336376_1920

Does COVID-19 Have You Working From Home?

Due to the stay at home mandate, there are many people who are working remotely these days.  It appears this mandate will last at least another month.  Many people have thought that working remotely would be great, but working remotely is a double-edge sword.  Sure, you get to stay home, but studies show that it can be harder to focus on work.

Benefits of Working Remotely:

  • Remote employees tend to be more productive
  • Remote workers cost employers less
  • Remote employees tend to be happier and more satisfied
  • Remote workers have a better work/life balance

Remote Workers Need to Be Aware of These Challenges:

  • Lack of a work routine
  • Tendency to over-work
  • Lack of human interaction
  • Prioritizing a work project
  • Interruptions from family, pets, phone calls, and the doorbell

How to Make Working Remotely Work for You

  • Confine your workspace to a specific area in your home.
  • Set up your workspace like your office.
  • Set a schedule and create a routine.
  • When in doubt, go with over-communication; update your boss frequently on everything you are doing, and whether your schedule and deliverables are changing in any way.
  • After work, stay off electronic devices for some time to transition to “home time.”
  • Take regular breaks.
  • Get dressed every day. Taking the time to get dressed and perform your usual self-care routine can prove a big psychological booster.

Running Out Of Quarantine Activities? Here Are Some Fun Ideas

children-403582_1920

While most of us are sheltering at home, hoping the COVID-19 pandemic passes as soon as possible, adjusting to a life of social distancing can be a challenge.

If you are getting to the point of running out of things to do, here are a few ideas to help you manage your time.

  • Set up a schedule for your kids that might include times for reading, schoolwork, exercise, and game time. Having a set routine can help maintain a sense of normalcy.
  • Schedule a “family happy hour” each evening before dinner. Use it as a time to talk about what is going on, future plans, or share fun family traditions.
  • Teach your kids to cook.
  • Have a family movie night with popcorn.
  • Set up an exercise routine. Run up and down the stairs.
  • Choose one room in your home to thoroughly clean and organize.
  • If the weather is pleasant, playing outside in your yard is a terrific option.
  • Take time each day to share something for which you are thankful. It can be difficult to deal with all the negative news right now, so share something positive.
  • Check out a video of people showing solidarity during this pandemic or read a positive story that you found online.
  • Take care of your physical health. Get the appropriate amount of sleep and exercise, and practice ways to reduce anxiety such as meditation, yoga, or listening to music.
  • Get out all those old-fashioned board games or play an electronic game or two. This would also be a great time to watch old family videos. Connecting with happier times is always good for our mental health.
  • Limit the news. For your own mental health and the mental health of your children, limit the intake of news.
  • Connect with old friends or family members via phone calls or video chat.
  • Plant a garden. Garden centers are open, and many are offering curbside service or home deliveries.
  • Clean out your garage and prepare unused items for a garage sale or donation.
  • Camp out in the back yard.
  • Make a family COVID-19 bracelet.
  • Listen to a podcast. To say that podcasts are having a moment is a massive understatement. There are wide ranges of podcasts available for listening enjoyment, including comedy, inspirational, self-help, or career guidance.
  • Learn a new craft. Have you ever wanted to learn to knit, crochet, or do woodworking? Now maybe the perfect time to learn a new skill. You can find plenty of instructions and YouTube videos online.

Be safe, be strong, #togetherapart
