Five Things People Should Know About Insurance

Insurance mind map flowchart with marker, business concept for presentations and reports

For many people, insurance can be difficult to understand.  Most people know that insurance is needed, but often they do not fully understand what they are buying or if they are properly covered.  That is why it is important to have an insurance agent on your side.  A good agent will help you determine what your insurance needs are, educate you about your options, and help you understand the specifics of the insurance you are buying.

Here are five things that you need to know as you consider your insurance options.

  1. You cannot add coverage for a claim that has already occurred.  For example, if there is flooding in your area, you cannot buy flood insurance during an event.
  • Coverage gaps can be costly. Having a gap or lapse in coverage can be costly.  Always pay your premiums on time, or ask for a grace period from your insurer.  You will end up paying more if you have lapses in your policy.
  • Insurance is not intended to cover everything. Insurance is designed to provide financial recovery after an accident or unforeseen loss. Every policy has exclusions which are important to understand. Remember, insurance is not intended to cover regular maintenance.
  • An agent can be a valuable resource. A licensed agent can help you find the best possible combination of coverage, price, and service that fits your individual needs.  A good agent will be willing to answer any questions you may have and be there for you when a claim occurs.
  • Do not skimp on liability insurance.  The cost of litigation these days underscores the need for everyone to have an adequate amount of liability insurance.  The greater your assets are, the greater your need is to have your assets covered.  To protect yourself and your family financially, buy enough liability insurance on your auto and home insurance policies to cover above your net worth.  We can help you determine how much coverage your individual needs require.

A Personal Insurance Update

Are you tired of people telling you why you need to buy their insurance?  Are you sick of buying “cheap” online insurance, only to end up with the wrong coverage?  We thought it might be fun to tell that you do not need personal insurance if you meet the following criteria.

Remember, personal insurance is designed to protect you from accidents and other unforeseen events.

You May Not Need Insurance If You

  • Never make any mistakes
  • Don’t own or drive a car—ever
  • Live in a county with no lawyers
  • Will never get sick
  • Plan to live in the hills in a tent
  • Don’t plan on having children
  • Believe the government will support you in your old age

It is important to note that not all homeowner’s policies are created equal, and what one company offers may not be the same as another company. Also keep in mind, if you bought your policy online, who really knows what coverage you have?

As an Independent Insurance Agency, we represent many of the top insurance companies in the country. This means better coverage, and at a competitive price, including life and health insurance.

Personal Umbrella Insurance

Personal Umbrella Insurance

You’ve worked hard to earn your lifestyle. Consider adding additional liability protection to your Auto, Home, Renters or Condo policy. Personal Umbrella Liability coverage added to your other policies can protect you, your spouse and any relatives living in your home.

Umbrella Insurance Protection

Umbrella Insurance provides extra protection or limits above the liability insurance you currently have. Just as an umbrella protects you from heavy rain, an umbrella insurance policy protects you from losing the entirety of your wealth and assets in the event of a claim. Umbrella insurance can provide limits above your business insurance, personal auto and home policies.

Umbrella insurance provides broad insurance beyond traditional insurance. It provides additional liability coverage above the limits of your primary insurance policies. It can also provide coverage for claims that may be excluded by the primary policies

It is true that personal umbrella insurance may not be for business or individual, but if you are a business, wanting to protect your company’s resources, building financial resources for your future, are a professional, own your home, boat or recreation vehicle, you should consider an umbrella insurance policy.  Having the added protection of an umbrella insurance policy is coverage no one should go without. Call us today, for a free review.

High Net Worth Individuals

Do you own a boat, second home or have other expensive toys? Often high net worth individuals need higher liability limits to protect personal assets. A simple rule is, the more you own the greater risk you may have of losing it. The nice thing about an umbrella policy is that it is competitively priced and can bring you great piece of mind.

As an Independent Insurance Agency, we represent many of the top insurance companies in the country. This means better coverage, and at a competitive price, including life and health insurance.

A Personal Insurance Update

insurance

Every homeowner in needs competitively priced personal insurance. Personal insurance can be tricky especially if you take your advice from certain entertaining television advertisements.  Many of these ads make insurance buying sound as simple as getting a cup of coffee.  The problem with this kind of thinking is that if you do not know what kind of personal insurance you need, how can you know what kind of insurance to buy?

The good news is we are here to help you find the right combination of coverage, price, and service.  We can help you identify what kind of insurance you need, then get you the best coverage at an affordable price.  The last thing you want is to find out after you have a claim that you have no coverage for that claim.

We put together a short list of mistakes many people make when buying insurance.  We hope you will call our office to get a no-obligation personal insurance review.

Common Insurance Mistakes

  1. Not knowing the replacement value of your home. Many people don’t understand the difference between “market value” and “replacement value.” Market value refers to the value of your home for resale purposes.  Replacement value refers to the cost to rebuild your home from the foundation up.  Ask your agent to help you define what it might cost to rebuild your home using current new construction costs.
  • Assuming you have flood and earthquake insurance.  All personal insurance policies exclude flood damage and earthquake damage to your home and personal property.  We can provide you with a competitively priced option for both kinds of coverage based on your individual needs.  There is a 30 to 45 day waiting period before any flood insurance can go into effect.
  • Assuming that sewage backup is automatically covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy.  Sewer backup coverage can be added at a very low cost and is recommended.  Sewer backup usually is defined as being caused by issues with the sewer line outside of the home.
  • Setting your deductible too low.  Many people set their auto insurance or home insurance deductibles too low.  Often a small increase in deductibles can offer significant savings from year to year.  If you have a good claim or loss history, it will pay you to increase your personal insurance deductibles.
  • Failing to use an independent agent.  Independent agents, like our firm, can shop your insurance to dozens of insurers and work with you to find the best possible combination of coverage, price, and service.  We are also there to help you manage and process all your personal insurance claims. We work for you—not for the insurance company.
  • Paying premiums in monthly installments. If you are able to pay your insurance in full, it can save you as much as 5% off your premium, depending on the coverage and insurance company.  There are also billing fees that are added to monthly premium installments.
  • Buying insurance based on price alone. Low priced insurance is good, but it may mean that in order to get a low price, the company is offering limited coverage.  Low priced insurance is good at first, but if you have a claim and have to pay a large amount out of your pocket, it really is not low-cost insurance.  We also recommend looking to A.M. Best, J.D. Power and the Better Business Bureau for ratings on an insurance company’s financial strength, handling of claims, and customer service/business practices, respectively.  We can also help you better understand which company may be better for your individual needs.
  • Only purchasing the legally required amount of auto liability coverage. The minimum amount of insurance is just that—the minimum.  If you have a claim over the policy limit, you will be required to come up with the money to settle all claims against you, including attorney’s fees.   If you own property or have any investments like a 401K, we recommend buying auto liability limits above the minimum requirement.  If you want to save money, consider dropping collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars worth less than $1,000.
  • Not bundling your home and auto insurance. One very good way to reduce your personal insurance premiums is to bundle your insurance policies with one insurer. You also might consider combining your boat, RV or motorcycle with one insurer as well. Bundling can save you a lot of time when it comes to making claims. If a fire in your garage damages your car and motorcycle, one phone call can start both the homeowners and auto insurance claims.
  1. Thinking stay at home parents don’t need life insurance. Life insurance can be just as important for the stay at home parent as it is for the breadwinner. Think of the cost of all the activities a stay at home parent undertakes, and put a dollar amount to these.

How COVID-19 Might Impact My Personal Insurance

COVID-19 has created many questions about your personal insurance risks and coverage. Here are a few things to consider regarding your personal insurance policies.

Most standard personal insurance policies exclude injury or loss due to communicable disease. We recommend you consult with your agent for a review of your individual personal insurance coverage.

Most personal insurance policies exclude liability for any business operations.  Working from home would be considered incidental and may not fall under the business exclusion. If you have clients in your home, it might impact your insurance.

What If I damage company-owned equipment? Your employer should have coverage for the business owned property.

What if I use my personal auto for business purposes? Most personal auto policies provide coverage for incidental use, going to the post office, getting supplies, etc. If you are using your personal vehicle for deliveries, Uber, or other business-specific tasks, you may need to amend your insurance policy.

We are committed to providing clients with the highest quality insurance plans available combined with some of the lowest possible rates. Whether you are shopping for auto insurance, home insurance, life or business insurance, we can help you obtain the best coverage available with the lowest rate possible.

As an Independent Insurance Agency, we represent many of the top insurance companies in the country. This means better coverage, and at a competitive price, including life and health insurance.

December Can Be A Dangerous Month

A Home Insurance Update

Are you dashing through the snow to grandma’s house?  Do silver bells keep ringing in your ear?  If you are getting into the Christmas spirit, remember your homeowner’s insurance can play an important role in helping keep your home a warm and safe place for the Holidays.

With a little preventive action and a solid home insurance policy, those risks can fade into the background, allowing you to enjoy these next few weeks to the fullest.

Now is a good time to review your personal insurance policies, making sure they’re up to snuff. While many of your risks are probably covered, a few might not be as explained below.

Here are some examples of some crazy Holiday related insurance claims:

  • A man in Texas was going to clean his pool for a Holiday party, and carried the bleach from the front of his home to the back.  He did not realize the lid was partially open and bleach dripped all over the carpet.
  • The Smith family put up a nice big Christmas tree in their family room.  They instructed their daughter to water the tree every day.  Their daughter did just that, but there was a hole in the Christmas tree stand and the water leaked all over their hardwood floors.
  • Parents from Washington wanted to surprise their kids with a 65-inch TV.  They hid it in the garage with a tarp over it.  One of the kids accidentally put the car in drive instead of reverse and ran into the hidden TV.
  • A family tied their fresh Christmas tree to the top of the car and headed home.  A short while later, the tree came loose and hit the car behind them.
  • A local family decided to use a deep fryer to cook the Christmas turkey.  The men all gathered in the garage and dropped the frozen bird in hot grease. The result was a totally destroyed garage an ruined Holiday.

Some Winter Safe Driving Tips

With winter weather approaching, we thought it would be good to provide a few tips on defensive driving especially during rain or other winter storms.  We want you and your family to stay safe and enjoy the winter months.  Now may also be a good time to have us complete a personal auto insurance review.  There are many ways to save on your auto insurance, so call our office today.

Here are a few procedures to follow to reduce the possibility of an accident or injury:

  • Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.
  • Before heading out, make sure your vehicle is in good running condition. Check your brakes, windshield wipers, exhaust system and heater. Make sure they are in top condition.
  • Know the road conditions before you travel.
  • Use extra caution when traveling across bridges and overpasses.  They freeze before the roads do.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Assemble a disaster supply kit. Include a first-aid kit, shovel, ice scraper, flashlight,

batteries, sand or cat litter, blankets, candles and matches, water, snacks, cell phone and car charger.

  • Keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid gas line freeze-ups.
  • Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly, and never slam on the brakes.
  • Watch carefully for black ice. Black ice is a thin layer of transparent ice that forms when the temperature is close to freezing.
  • Do not text and drive.  It has the same effect as driving drunk.
  • Be extra cautious when driving in mountains.  Mountain weather in winter can be severe and can change rapidly. Be ready for wind gusts in exposed positions, and give the right of way to emergency vehicles and snowplows.
  • If you become stranded in a winter storm, do not leave your vehicle. Stay with the vehicle and wait for help.

Even in the best weather conditions, auto accidents are a leading cause of death and injury for all ages. Drive safe and arrive safe.

Tips To Keep Your Home Deliveries Safe This Holiday Season

The holiday season is filled with fun, parties, food, gifts, overeating and unfortunately some risk. One of the fasted growing risks for many people are stolen packages by porch pirates.  According to proopertycasualtiy360, over 26 million packages are stolen during the holiday season.  Need more bad news?

Your homeowners or renter’s insurance generally may not cover this loss as it tends to be under your deductible.  There could be coverage if you have personal property off premises insurance.  Also for theft coverage to apply generally, you need proof of loss by a broker indoor, etc.

Call our office for a review of your homeowner’s insurance, as each policy is unique to your circumstances.

Things To Do

  • Delivery confirmation is a good way to prove the package was delivered.
  • Thieves will follow delivery trucks, waiting for the perfect target.
  • These thieves commonly strike during working hours as many homes are empty at that time.
  • You can insure your packages.
  • Consider having a person there when the delivery is scheduled.
  • Install a security camera.

High Tech Solutions

There are a few high tech solutions to consider.

  • Landport or BoxLock provides a delivery box on your porch that has an electronic lock.
  • Amazon Key, which has a fairly simple premise:  When a delivery arrives at your house, and you’re not home, the courier scans a barcode that sends a request to Amazon’s cloud. If it’s approved Amazon remotely unlocks your door and starts recording video through the online retailer’s Cloud Cam.
  • Install a front door camera.  Many shippers will not replace the item with this kind of device.

What To Do If A Package Is Stolen

  • Track your package. Check the delivery confirmation and tracking number.
  • Make sure a neighbor did not pick it up for you.
  • Contact the seller.  Different retailers have different policies and processes for handling stolen items, but usually, you are entitled to a refund or a replacement item.
  • File a claim with the shipping company.
  • Check your Credit Cards for Purchase Protection.
