Don’t Make These Mistakes

Knowledge Is PowerFlorida Personal and business insurance buyers–don’t make these mistakes

Everyone who buys insurance often runs into what we call the 7 deadly sins of buying insurance. These apply to both personal insurance and business insurance. Read these to see if you can relate to any of them.

  1. Your deductibles are too low. The lower the deductible the higher the premium. Consider increase auto physical damage deductible on older vehicles.
  2. You have more than one agent. Having two agents it not wise. Select one agent whom you believe will be best for you. Two agents can trip over each other, and you could end up un-insured.
  3. You don’t consider the insurance cost when buying a car. The make and model of the car you purchase will have an impact on the insurance costs.
  4. Your replacement cost value is not correct. It is very important to keep your replacement cost up to date. Replacement cost coverage will replace or rebuild your property with like kind and quality of materials.
  5. Failure to develop a property inventory. Having an accurate inventory of your personal property can reduce stress at the time of a loss and help insure you receive 100% of what you lost.
  6. You have coverage you do not need. There are many different types of insurance you can buy but not all are needed. For example, travel insurance, pet insurance, extended warranties and mortgage life insurance is not always needed. We have other options and recommendations, call us today.
  7. Cancer insurance. Marketed by specialty-insurance companies, these plans supplement health insurance for cancer-care costs. Annual premiums range between $400 to $2,000 dollars. Despite their high cost, the policies may not cover outpatient care. Chances are that your existing health insurance already covers cancer expenses.

How To Prepare For Holiday Home Safety

christmas-card-2945633_1280The Holidays are almost upon us, and if you have been to any department store, the sounds of Christmas are ringing out. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over 400 homes are destroyed annually by causes related to Christmas tree fires. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission hospital emergency rooms treat over 12,900 people each year for injuries such as falls, cuts and shocks related to holiday lights, decorations and Christmas trees. Before you put up the lights or cut down the tree, we wanted to provide you with a few safety reminders to keep you and your family safe this holiday season.

The Tree

  • Keep Christmas Trees Fresh; water regularly.
  • Keep trees away from heat sources.
  • Take Christmas trees down before January.
  • Do not burn the trees in your fireplace.
  • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments, or ones with small detachable parts, on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them.
  • When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”.

Lights

  • Only use lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory.
  • Never string together more lights than are recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Make sure extension cords are rated for the intended use.
  • Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.
  • Turn off all holiday lights when you go to bed or leave the house.
  • If you use a timer for your outdoor lights, make sure it is rated for outside use.
  • Outdoor lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)

Ladder Safety

  • When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. Don’t stand on chairs, desks, or other furniture.
  • A straight or extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder height.
  • Use ladders with slip-resistant feet.
  • Never stand on top two steps.

Enjoy the season with family and friends, and never drink and drive.

Are Electric Scooters Covered Under My Insurance Policy?

e-scooter-4496668_1280A Personal Insurance Update

Scooters are popping up all over cities across the country.  They have been popular in Europe for years.  We are at the beginning of this new form of personal transportation, which creates a few questions regarding risk, liability, and insurance coverage.

Scooter usage Facts (Forbes)

  • 4 % of riders wear helmets
  • 80% of accidents are results of falling
  • Head trauma is the most common type of injury

Most cities don’t have regulation or rules because they don’t qualify as a motor vehicle. Some cities require a driver’s license and helmet, but these are mostly on the honor system.  Users can rent the scooter then leave it anywhere they want (in your front yard or in front of your business).

Insurance companies are busy trying to figure out who is liable in the event a scooter accident injures someone.  What if the scooter rider injures someone while on the job, will the injuries be covered under workers’ compensation and any liability be the responsibility of the employer insurer?  Business insurance policies may not address scooters specifically. Depending on the circumstances, some electric scooter-related injuries may be covered while others may not.

Right now, most insurers will not cover scooter crashes; auto insurers also will not cover them as they are not defined as an automobile.

Scooter companies have strict waivers that are included in the rental agreement limiting any liability to the rental companies.  One company offers a $1,000,000 liability policy, but all claims would be subject to extensive investigations.

Most legal experts agree that the rider will bear the legal liability arising from accidents because of the terms to which the rider agrees to when downloading the app.  The laws, the courts, and the insurance industry are often slow to respond to new technology, and this may be the case with electric scooters. Relatively few laws specific to e-scooters have been passed

We recommend you contact your insurance agent to discuss if your personal insurance provides any coverage or if you need to add coverage to your program.

How To Protect Your Identity During The 2019 Holiday Season

aqazxaBlack Friday and Cyber Monday are coming, and holiday spending will continue right up to December 24th. According to the Nation Retail Federation, 84% of Americans will use the internet to shop during the holidays. Even during non-holiday times, people are using noncash transactions for the purchases of goods and services.

Cybercriminals are smart, and you need to be informed about protecting your identity. Identity theft has been the No. 1 consumer complaint for 12-straight years, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Experts tell us that it can take over 100 hours and thousands of dollars to restore your identity once it has been stolen. There are things you can do to protect your identity during the holidays and throughout the year.

  • Consider identity theft insurance.
  • When shopping, only take the credit cards you need.
  • Credit cards have more protection than a debit card. Do not use your debit card or checks for transactions because these forms of payment are directly linked to your bank account.
  • Review your bank statements to make sure all transactions are correct.
  • When online shopping, only use sites you have used before or those that are reputable.
  • Use secure ATMs.
  • Make sure your antivirus and anti-spyware software is up to date.
  • Don’t open emails from people you don’t know, even if your name is in the reference line.
  • Don’t shop on unprotected wireless networks. Enjoy your coffee at the coffee shop, but do your shopping at home.
  • Use complex passwords and change them regularly.
  • Know the signs of identity theft.
  • Keep your Social Security Card and number locked up.
  • Keep your laptop or tablet locked in the trunk.
  • Keep receipts in your purse or wallet, not in the bag.

Identity Theft insurance

Identity Theft Protection assists with the costs of restoring and repairing a consumer’s identity and credit history. Identity theft insurance coverage usually covers assistance in straightening out the aftermath of identity theft (such as canceling unauthorized accounts and so forth), which is generally easy when the fraud involves credit cards, but can be more time-consuming for accounts at banks and other institutions.

Trick Or Treat… Are You Covered

halloween-959006_1920A Homeowners Insurance Update

Your homeowners insurance covers many different kinds of risks including vandalism caused by trick-or-treaters.  Now may be a good time to have a free home insurance review.

In the next few days, we will be watching children scramble from house to house in search of the elusive Halloween treat.  However, keeping our kids safe as they are active on Halloween night is always a concern.  A little pre-planning can prevent unfortunate accidents that could turn out to be tragic.  Remember, your homeowner’s insurance will cover you in most cases should someone trip and fall on your premises.

Here are some pointers for ensuring your house is a safe place for trick-or-treaters on Oct. 31.

  • Consider providing healthy treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks.  For your guests, offer a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause someone to fall.
  • Keep candle-lit jack o’lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.
  • Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.

Safety Tips for Kids

  • Never, ever, go into a house.
  • Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
  • An adult or an older responsible child should always accompany young children.  Even older children should go trick-or-treating with an adult, or in a group.  Never go out alone.
  • Only go to homes with a porch light on.
  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective.
  • Do not eat homemade food.
  • Examine all candy.  If it has been opened, toss it out.
  • Use a flashlight.

Important Auto Insurance Terms

free444An Auto Insurance Review

This state requires everyone who owns a vehicle to have personal auto liability insurance.  Auto insurance comes in many different shapes and sizes. There are many different terms and coverage’s you need to understand if you are going to protect you and your family.  As you consider the many different kinds of coverage, we can help you find the right combination of price, coverage, and service.

Bodily Injury Liability

This coverage pays for costs or claims associated with bodily injuries to the other persons (third parties) or people involved in the accident. This coverage also provides defense coverage in the event that you are sued for damages.  We always recommend having higher than the minimum limits. If a claim exceeds your own policy limit, you will be responsible for all costs.

 Collision Coverage For Your Vehicle

Collision and comprehensive is often referred to as ‘full coverage.’ If you have collision coverage, and are in an accident or hit with another vehicle or property, you will have coverage to repair or replace your vehicle after your deductible is satisfied.  Collision and comprehensive coverage are not required, but they may be required by your loan company or leasing company.

Roadside Assistance And Towing Coverage

Collision & comprehensive covers the vehicle when it is damaged. Emergency roadside assistance and towing coverage can be added to your personal auto policy in most cases. Coverage will help with gas fill-ups, battery jumps, tire changes, and towing. Make sure to check if you have necessary towing (up to 15 miles) or extended towing (up to 100 miles).

Rental Car Reimbursement

When your vehicle is in the repair shop after a covered accident, your policy will provide you a rental car (if you have purchased the coverage) while your own car is getting repaired. You will need to have purchased comprehensive and collision on your policy in order to add rental car coverage. Coverage is subject to limitations.

This is intended to be a brief review of auto insurance. Your actual coverage will depend on your individual policy.

Can You Live Without Disaster Insurance?

flash-731488_1920We live in a great state. But we do have unique risks that we need to manage and prepare for. Your homeowner’s insurance can be designed to protect you from most of these risks and disasters.

Insurance And Disasters

It is safe to say that most business and homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover the risks associated with disasters. The only exception would be damage caused by wildfires. Let’s look at how insurance might apply to other disasters.

  1. Floods— Only 13% of U.S. homeowners had flood-insurance policies last year according to the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group. Flood insurance must be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program. We can help you if you need the coverage.
  2. Hurricanes— Most property insurance policies provide coverage for losses resulting from hurricanes, except for flood loss associated with the hurricane. If you live in a high wind area, you will need to have a separate policy to cover your home and personal property.
  3. Tornadoes— Damage from tornadoes typically is covered, since it usually is considered wind damage.
  4. Mudslides— A standard home insurance policy does not protect your home against damage caused by a mudslide. Mudslides are usually defined as ground movement. Heavy rains that cause a mudflow would typically be covered.
  5. Hail— Most homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for losses resulting from hail.
  6. Wildfires— It can be safe to say that all homeowner’s insurance covers loss resulting from a fire. Wildfires are considered a fire and would be covered.

Coverage disclaimer–the information provided here is for general purposes only. It is not our intent to change or modify insurance coverage. Each insurance policy is different and your individual coverage will be determined by the terms of your insurance policy.

Cyber Risks Are Real

cyber-security-1784985_1280

Every business owner has read about cyber breaches and how these impact every business. We want to focus on how to prevent your confidential business information from being compromised in the first place. Cyber breaches come in a variety of forms, so we will focus on the most popular breaches; Insider breaches, payment and credit card skimmers, and direct cyber-attacks. With most of today’s critical information stored on computer systems, cyber-attacks can cost firms time, money, and data, but also their reputations.

Prevention Tips

  • Provide Training to all employees. Helping your employees understand how cyber breaches occur, will go a long way in prevention.
  • Keep your operating system, browser, anti-virus, and other critical software up to date.
  • If at all possible utilize a third party company to serve as your IT department, unless you are large enough to have full time professionals.
  • Activate your firewall. Firewalls are the first line of cyber defense; they block connections to unknown or bogus sites and will keep out some types of viruses and hackers.
  • Secure all passwords and do not share them with anyone.
  • Use only secure wireless networks.
  • Develop a secure way to allow laptops off the premises. Never keep client information on laptops if used off site.
  • Verify the authenticity of requests from companies or individuals by contacting them directly.
  • When an employee leaves the company or is terminated, turn off the access to their computer. If there is personal information on their computer, have your IT person manage the process.
  • Be aware of pushing scams. This involves a hacker using an email or website to install malicious software onto your computer. These web entities are designed to look like a normal email or website, which is how hackers convince their victims to hand over personal information.
  • Never open an email from someone you don’t recognize, even if it identifies you by name.
  • Do not give out any information over the phone or in an email unless you are completely sure it is authentic. Social engineering is a process of deceiving individuals into providing personal information to seemingly trusted agents who turn out to be malicious actors.
  • Carefully read the permission release before installing apps.
  • You may want to consider encryption programs for sending confidential information.

As the summer vacation season approaches and thoughts turn to fun in the sun, getting on an airplane or even camping. If you plan on traveling to a foreign country, call our office for an insurance review.

Consider Travel Insurance

When traveling overseas, you never know what could unexpectedly happen. In the case of a medical emergency, lost baggage, or stolen wallet, it can be difficult to find your bearings in an unfamiliar place. We can provide coverage when traveling internationally.

Here are some tips to protect your data from prying eyes so you can have one less thing to worry about on your vacation.

  • Don’t post on social media until you return.
  • Let a trusted neighbor know you will be away and have them keep an eye on your home. It is a good idea to leave your vacation address and telephone number with a neighbor so you can be reached in case of an emergency.
  • Be aware of any travel and health alerts at your destination.
  • Write out a schedule and give it to a family member for safety purposes.
  • Make copies of all of your credit cards, important identification information, including your medical insurance cards, and your traveler’s checks.
  • Advise your alarm company and local police if you will be gone for an extended period.
  • Stop the paper and garbage service.
  • Don’t take expensive jewelry with you. Jewelry can get lost or be a target for thieves.
  • Never put your home address on your luggage tags. Write your phone number instead.
  • If you are traveling to a foreign country remember to study up on laws and customs. You will have a much better time if you understand the culture.

Before you leave for vacation, you may decide to close your curtains to prevent people from peering inside your home to see whether you’re there. However, closed curtains also stop those who aim to help the police, your neighbors or friends from seeing inside your house
