Cyber Risks Are Real

Every business owner has read about cyber breaches and how these impact every business. We want to focus on how to prevent your confidential business information from being compromised in the first place. Cyber breaches come in a variety of forms, so we will focus on the most popular breaches; Insider breaches, payment and credit card skimmers, and direct cyber-attacks. With most of today’s critical information stored on computer systems, cyber-attacks can cost firms time, money, and data, but also their reputations.

Prevention Tips

  • Provide Training to all employees. Helping your employees understand how cyber breaches occur, will go a long way in prevention.
  • Keep your operating system, browser, anti-virus, and other critical software up to date.
  • If at all possible utilize a third party company to serve as your IT department, unless you are large enough to have full time professionals.
  • Activate your firewall. Firewalls are the first line of cyber defense; they block connections to unknown or bogus sites and will keep out some types of viruses and hackers.
  • Secure all passwords and do not share them with anyone.
  • Use only secure wireless networks.
  • Develop a secure way to allow laptops off the premises. Never keep client information on laptops if used off site.
  • Verify the authenticity of requests from companies or individuals by contacting them directly.
  • When an employee leaves the company or is terminated, turn off the access to their computer. If there is personal information on their computer, have your IT person manage the process.
  • Be aware of pushing scams. This involves a hacker using an email or website to install malicious software onto your computer. These web entities are designed to look like a normal email or website, which is how hackers convince their victims to hand over personal information.
  • Never open an email from someone you don’t recognize, even if it identifies you by name.
  • Do not give out any information over the phone or in an email unless you are completely sure it is authentic. Social engineering is a process of deceiving individuals into providing personal information to seemingly trusted agents who turn out to be malicious actors.
  • Carefully read the permission release before installing apps.
  • You may want to consider encryption programs for sending confidential information.

Does Your Homeowner’s Insurance Cover Social Media?

A Texas jury has awarded a wedding photographer more than $1 million after determining a newly married couple unhappy with her work launched a social media campaign to post falsehoods about her. The Dallas County jury found Friday that the campaign against Andrea Polito amounted to defamation. The jury unanimously found the couple acted of out malice in targeting Polito in the months after their October 2014 wedding. (AP) Read article.

Social media has changed how we communicate with family and friends. Technology has made it so that anyone can have their voice heard and their comments recorded for posterity.  Among the greatest contributors to this revolution are your teenagers…and you can be held responsible for their actions.

What Kind Of Personal Insurance Claim Can Come From A Social Media Post?

Recently, a 16-year-old student sued five classmates and their parents for online harassment. Whether or not the allegations are true, the teenagers and their parents required legal resources to defend themselves for the possible judgments against them.

What Does Homeowner’s Insurance Provide?

Most people assume their homeowner’s insurance will cover any kind of claim that comes from social media content. However, you need to have personal injury coverage as part of your homeowner’s insurance policy. If you bought your insurance online you may not have this coverage.

Personal Injury coverage is an optional endorsement on the standard homeowner’s policy that provides protection for libel, slander, defamation of character, false arrest, malicious prosecution, and wrongful eviction. This coverage is also provided by most umbrella policies.

Remember, Criminals Are Also Looking For Deals This Holiday

The Most Common Holiday Theft Losses

We are in the middle of the holiday season.  While you are out shopping for that perfect gift, criminals are also out looking for ways to enhance their holiday take. While your personal insurance will most likely cover losses from theft, we thought it might be good to identify the most common holiday theft losses.

Now might be a good time to have us review your personal insurance. Stop in and have some coffee while we review your homeowner’s insurance coverage.

Theft From Vehicles

While you are in the store, criminals are in the parking lot looking for easy ways to get into your vehicle.  Keep all packages in the trunk; always lock your car, park close to the store, and in a well-lit area.

Home Burglaries

Home burglaries increase in December, due to people traveling and an increased number of easy targets.  When you leave your home, keep lights on, close your drapes, and never leave packages on your front porch.  Thieves will follow delivery trucks waiting for an opportunity to strike. Most online retailers send emails and text messages so purchasers know almost immediately when a package has been delivered.

Stolen Purses

When you are shopping, never leave your purse in the shopping cart, keep your purse closed, only take the credit cards you need, and leave other cards and documents at home.  Don’t carry a lot of cash and wait until asked to produce your credit card so a nearby thief can’t get your account information.

Identity Theft

Online shopping has become as big as direct shopping. Make sure to use secure websites and log off when completing any purchases.

As an Independent Insurance Agency, we represent many of the top insurance companies in the country. This means better coverage, and at a competitive price, including life and health insurance.

Florida Cyber Liability

Hackers are trying very hard to breach your business computers.  While some cyber attacks originate within the United States, it is foreign hackers that lead the list of problems for most American companies. Over 50% of cyber losses come from third party hackers, 20% from human errors, and less than 19% from system errors.

Leading Causes of Florida Cyber Attacks

  1. Viruses loaded onto computers
  2. Third party attacks of financial records
  3. Third party access to computer systems
  4. Employees hacking or loading a virus
  5. Employees misuse of computers, or having laptops stolen

Claim Examples

A manufacturer received a call and an email, which they thought was from their bank, asking for a verification of funds request. The CFO provided the information, and $75,000 was removed from their account. The cyber thief was able to steal $75,000 from the manufacturer.

A restaurant had 200 credit card records stolen. The hacker was able to charge $120,000 on the credit cards. The restaurant incurred notification costs and direct damages of over $250,000.

Cyber Insurance

Most business insurance policies do not cover computer fraud by a third party or the liability arising out of a cyber-attack. The good news is solutions are available.  We can provide your firm with the right combination of pricing and coverage. Cyber Liability insurance is available at very reasonable premiums. Many of our companies offer coverage to help protect your business from loss.
