Did You Just Buy A Flood-Damaged Car?

How to make sure you don’t get stuck with a water soaked car

It may be possible that a number of flood-damaged automobiles will be on the used car market in the near future.  These disasters tend to bring out dishonest business people who want to take advantage of the situation.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has established a consumer service called VINCheckSM.  This service allows car buyers to see if the vehicle has been declared as salvage by an NICB member.

How to spot a flood damaged car

  • Use a reputable auto dealer.
  • Is there new carpet in a 5-year-old car?
  • Use your sense of smell. Flood-damaged cars may smell of mold.
  • Check under the carpet for rust.
  • Make sure all electronics work.
  • Is there water in the headlights or tail lights?
  • Mud and debris on the underside of panels and brackets is another good sign the car has been under water.

If you’re from an area affected by a flood and have a car that wasn’t damaged, be aware that buyers might suspect it was.  Damaged cars can also be moved to other states, so even if you live outside a flooded area, be aware.

Setting The Record Straight Regarding Insurance

A Personal Insurance Update

There are so many ways that some insurance companies confuse buyers that it can be hard for many to discern fact from fiction. Often the complexity of insurance can cause us to create frustration and can lead to uninformed decisions. We want to help you make the insurance purchasing decision as easy as possible buy offer you the best possible combination of insurance coverage, price, and service.

Misconceptions about insurance

  • Online insurance gives you the best deals. Buying online insurance does not save you time, and it can often be more expensive. As an independent agent, we search the market for the best rates and bring them back to you.
  • All insurance companies are the same. Not true, some insurance companies prefer older drivers, while others have great rates on RV’s and motorcycles. Some insurers are better for insuring that hot rod or antique car.
  • Insurance is all about low cost. Sure you can get low-cost insurance, but you may not have the coverage you need when you have a loss. For example, we received a call from an individual that bought insurance online and had an accident. The insurance was cheap, and it was because there was no collision coverage. The individual had to pay $3,000 for the repair of their vehicle. We were able to secure the coverage they needed.

How Our Sharing Economy May Increase Your Risk

How Our Sharing Economy May Increase Your Risk

We live in a digital world that now allows us to share everything from our car, bike, boat, apartment and even our home with total strangers. Smart phones, and the applications that can be added, offer many useful tools, but some of these things create new and increased liability for you. Before you decide to jump into the sharing economy consider the following:

  • Do these sharing sites have the ability to protect your confidential information? Many times you are giving your credit card information to companies that may not have the ability to protect it.
  • If you use Airbnb to sublease your apartment, you might check your lease. Many lease agreements have “no sublease” clauses that do not allow for this kind of activity. Also, some big cities are now actually considering outlawing the Airbnb services as it reduces hotel/motel taxes.
  • Taxi services where individuals can offer rides to those who subscribe. Are you confident that these individuals have had proper background checks? Are they experienced drivers? Do they have the correct insurance? Remember, even in states that have mandatory auto insurance laws, over 25% of drivers don’t have insurance.
  • Personal auto insurance issues should be considered if using your car for hire. There is a big difference in the auto insurance world between a car pool for work and being paid to deliver people.
  • If you rent your primary home to others, it may limit your personal insurance Call out office for a review.

The use of the new sharing economy will most likely continue and may be a good way to make money. However, if you have an uninsured claim, the cost may be much greater.  Be aware that using these services may increase your risk of loss.

I Just Got a Ticket…Will My Auto Rates Go UP?

car-1531277_640 (1)Have you recently had the bad luck of receiving a speeding citation? A ticket for speeding or other moving violation may increase your auto premiums. Some of this depends on the timing of your ticket and your renewal date. If you have had several traffic violations in a three year period, your carrier may decide to drop you. We will always search the market for the best alternative for all our clients.

Your auto insurance rates are determined based on how risky the insurance company considers you to be. Insurance carriers will have different methods for calculating risk, and thus different methods for determining rates.

Violations that relate to unsafe driving that will cause your premiums to increase include:

  • Drunk driving
  • Texting while driving
  • Failure to stop or yield right of way
  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Failure to stop at a light
  • Speeding in a construction zone

One leading industry research company studied 500,000 drivers and found that auto premiums went up by 20% after one of the violations listed above. Remember these are national averages and your individual circumstance will apply to what the carrier may or may not do.

Driving safely may be enough for you to avoid any spikes in your premiums. Of course, if your rates go up, they can also go down. By being a safe driver, you may see the price you pay for auto insurance decrease over the years.

Florida Risk And Insurance Trends To Watch For 2017

Risk Management

risk management concept with yellow road sign

The risk management landscape is changing fast. It is important for business owners and managers to understand how these trends will impact their commercial insurance programs. Technology, consumer trends, litigation, and regulations all have increased risk.

  • The Changing workplace environment. Employers are having to manage a change in workplace demographics. The baby boomers are retiring and employers will need to figure out how to attract the next generation of workers.
  • Cyber Risk. Every Florida business will need to consider cyber insurance. Most businesses have a greater risk of having a cyber-attack than they do of having a fire. Cyber security was big news last year. Hardly a week went by without a report of a data breach in some industry. In fact, the Identity Theft Resource Center reported a record high of 1,233 data breaches in 2015, which is a 39 percent increase from 2015’s numbers.
  • Employment Laws. Whenever there is political change you can count on new and/or updated employment laws. Employers will need to keep up to date on how these laws will impact their businesses. Every employer should consider Employment Practices Liability Insurance.
  • Connections with Customers. As we continue to increase our reliance on technology, businesses must find the best ways to stay connected with clients. Customers want real time information about the products and services you provide. The road to being connected begins with understanding that consumers want to use technology in their healthcare decisions. They want to be able to email their partners and access services and information through telecommunication devices.
  • Workers’ Compensation. All states will continue to address legislative measures that could have an impact on employers including; drug usage, independent medical exams, medical marijuana, and the misclassification of employees and contractors.
