Tips for Working at Home

blogging-336376_1920

Does COVID-19 Have You Working From Home?

Due to the stay at home mandate, there are many people who are working remotely these days.  It appears this mandate will last at least another month.  Many people have thought that working remotely would be great, but working remotely is a double-edge sword.  Sure, you get to stay home, but studies show that it can be harder to focus on work.

Benefits of Working Remotely:

  • Remote employees tend to be more productive
  • Remote workers cost employers less
  • Remote employees tend to be happier and more satisfied
  • Remote workers have a better work/life balance

Remote Workers Need to Be Aware of These Challenges:

  • Lack of a work routine
  • Tendency to over-work
  • Lack of human interaction
  • Prioritizing a work project
  • Interruptions from family, pets, phone calls, and the doorbell

How to Make Working Remotely Work for You

  • Confine your workspace to a specific area in your home.
  • Set up your workspace like your office.
  • Set a schedule and create a routine.
  • When in doubt, go with over-communication; update your boss frequently on everything you are doing, and whether your schedule and deliverables are changing in any way.
  • After work, stay off electronic devices for some time to transition to “home time.”
  • Take regular breaks.
  • Get dressed every day. Taking the time to get dressed and perform your usual self-care routine can prove a big psychological booster.

Running Out Of Quarantine Activities? Here Are Some Fun Ideas

children-403582_1920

While most of us are sheltering at home, hoping the COVID-19 pandemic passes as soon as possible, adjusting to a life of social distancing can be a challenge.

If you are getting to the point of running out of things to do, here are a few ideas to help you manage your time.

  • Set up a schedule for your kids that might include times for reading, schoolwork, exercise, and game time. Having a set routine can help maintain a sense of normalcy.
  • Schedule a “family happy hour” each evening before dinner. Use it as a time to talk about what is going on, future plans, or share fun family traditions.
  • Teach your kids to cook.
  • Have a family movie night with popcorn.
  • Set up an exercise routine. Run up and down the stairs.
  • Choose one room in your home to thoroughly clean and organize.
  • If the weather is pleasant, playing outside in your yard is a terrific option.
  • Take time each day to share something for which you are thankful. It can be difficult to deal with all the negative news right now, so share something positive.
  • Check out a video of people showing solidarity during this pandemic or read a positive story that you found online.
  • Take care of your physical health. Get the appropriate amount of sleep and exercise, and practice ways to reduce anxiety such as meditation, yoga, or listening to music.
  • Get out all those old-fashioned board games or play an electronic game or two. This would also be a great time to watch old family videos. Connecting with happier times is always good for our mental health.
  • Limit the news. For your own mental health and the mental health of your children, limit the intake of news.
  • Connect with old friends or family members via phone calls or video chat.
  • Plant a garden. Garden centers are open, and many are offering curbside service or home deliveries.
  • Clean out your garage and prepare unused items for a garage sale or donation.
  • Camp out in the back yard.
  • Make a family COVID-19 bracelet.
  • Listen to a podcast. To say that podcasts are having a moment is a massive understatement. There are wide ranges of podcasts available for listening enjoyment, including comedy, inspirational, self-help, or career guidance.
  • Learn a new craft. Have you ever wanted to learn to knit, crochet, or do woodworking? Now maybe the perfect time to learn a new skill. You can find plenty of instructions and YouTube videos online.

Be safe, be strong, #togetherapart

How To Prepare For Holiday Home Safety

christmas-card-2945633_1280The Holidays are almost upon us, and if you have been to any department store, the sounds of Christmas are ringing out. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, over 400 homes are destroyed annually by causes related to Christmas tree fires. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission hospital emergency rooms treat over 12,900 people each year for injuries such as falls, cuts and shocks related to holiday lights, decorations and Christmas trees. Before you put up the lights or cut down the tree, we wanted to provide you with a few safety reminders to keep you and your family safe this holiday season.

The Tree

  • Keep Christmas Trees Fresh; water regularly.
  • Keep trees away from heat sources.
  • Take Christmas trees down before January.
  • Do not burn the trees in your fireplace.
  • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments, or ones with small detachable parts, on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them.
  • When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”.

Lights

  • Only use lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory.
  • Never string together more lights than are recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Make sure extension cords are rated for the intended use.
  • Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.
  • Turn off all holiday lights when you go to bed or leave the house.
  • If you use a timer for your outdoor lights, make sure it is rated for outside use.
  • Outdoor lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)

Ladder Safety

  • When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. Don’t stand on chairs, desks, or other furniture.
  • A straight or extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder height.
  • Use ladders with slip-resistant feet.
  • Never stand on top two steps.

Enjoy the season with family and friends, and never drink and drive.

How To Protect Your Identity During The 2019 Holiday Season

aqazxaBlack Friday and Cyber Monday are coming, and holiday spending will continue right up to December 24th. According to the Nation Retail Federation, 84% of Americans will use the internet to shop during the holidays. Even during non-holiday times, people are using noncash transactions for the purchases of goods and services.

Cybercriminals are smart, and you need to be informed about protecting your identity. Identity theft has been the No. 1 consumer complaint for 12-straight years, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Experts tell us that it can take over 100 hours and thousands of dollars to restore your identity once it has been stolen. There are things you can do to protect your identity during the holidays and throughout the year.

  • Consider identity theft insurance.
  • When shopping, only take the credit cards you need.
  • Credit cards have more protection than a debit card. Do not use your debit card or checks for transactions because these forms of payment are directly linked to your bank account.
  • Review your bank statements to make sure all transactions are correct.
  • When online shopping, only use sites you have used before or those that are reputable.
  • Use secure ATMs.
  • Make sure your antivirus and anti-spyware software is up to date.
  • Don’t open emails from people you don’t know, even if your name is in the reference line.
  • Don’t shop on unprotected wireless networks. Enjoy your coffee at the coffee shop, but do your shopping at home.
  • Use complex passwords and change them regularly.
  • Know the signs of identity theft.
  • Keep your Social Security Card and number locked up.
  • Keep your laptop or tablet locked in the trunk.
  • Keep receipts in your purse or wallet, not in the bag.

Identity Theft insurance

Identity Theft Protection assists with the costs of restoring and repairing a consumer’s identity and credit history. Identity theft insurance coverage usually covers assistance in straightening out the aftermath of identity theft (such as canceling unauthorized accounts and so forth), which is generally easy when the fraud involves credit cards, but can be more time-consuming for accounts at banks and other institutions.

Summer Travel Safety

As the summer vacation season approaches and thoughts turn to fun in the sun, getting on an airplane or even camping. If you plan on traveling to a foreign country, call our office for an insurance review.

Consider Travel Insurance

When traveling overseas, you never know what could unexpectedly happen. In the case of a medical emergency, lost baggage, or stolen wallet, it can be difficult to find your bearings in an unfamiliar place. We can provide coverage when traveling internationally.

Here are some tips to protect your data from prying eyes so you can have one less thing to worry about on your vacation.

  • Don’t post on social media until you return.
  • Let a trusted neighbor know you will be away and have them keep an eye on your home. It is a good idea to leave your vacation address and telephone number with a neighbor so you can be reached in case of an emergency.
  • Be aware of any travel and health alerts at your destination.
  • Write out a schedule and give it to a family member for safety purposes.
  • Make copies of all of your credit cards, important identification information, including your medical insurance cards, and your traveler’s checks.
  • Advise your alarm company and local police if you will be gone for an extended period.
  • Stop the paper and garbage service.
  • Don’t take expensive jewelry with you. Jewelry can get lost or be a target for thieves.
  • Never put your home address on your luggage tags. Write your phone number instead.
  • If you are traveling to a foreign country remember to study up on laws and customs. You will have a much better time if you understand the culture.

Before you leave for vacation, you may decide to close your curtains to prevent people from peering inside your home to see whether you’re there. However, closed curtains also stop those who aim to help the police, your neighbors or friends from seeing inside your house

We Can Offer You More Than Just Insurance, We Offer Peace Of Mind

update-1672385_1280We Can Offer You More Than Just Insurance, We Offer Peace Of Mind

Your insurance needs change over time, so it is important to review your policies periodically to make sure they are up-to-date. Tragically, many people are not insured after devastating natural disasters. It’s never too late to do a homeowner’s insurance checkup before the next threat heads your way. This article highlights some important insurance coverage you should consider such as:

  • Earthquake Insurance
  • Flood Insurance
  • Wind Insurance

Steps To Help Secure The Right Coverage

  • Make sure your homes information is up to date. Your agent should shave to right square footage and replacement value.
  • Research the replacement cost for new construction in your area.
  • Have our agency provide you with coverage options for competitive insurance products.
  • Consider getting a “floater” to your home insurance policy. If you own valuable furs, jewelry, guns, collections, silverware, or artwork, a “floater” can cover the full value of those items. Consider adding building code or ordinance or law endorsement, which will help pay the higher cost of bringing plumbing, wiring, or other key systems up to current codes when rebuilding.

Don’t Get Wet… Florida Boating Safety Tips

freedfcv5Summer is here and that means it is time to get out on the water.  We hope that you and your family have a great time.  But remember, your watercraft needs to be insured, and we can provide a full range of watercraft insurance products for you. Your boat will need insurance for watercraft liability, damage to the hull, and personal property.

Watercraft insurance policies can cover damage to your boat, motor, trailer, and personal effects in the boat.  Available coverage includes liability, medical payments, coverage for injury to a water skier, and damage to the boat itself, sometimes called hull coverage.  Availability varies by state and by insurance company.  Even though boat insurance premiums are low, shopping your rate can sometimes save a substantial amount.

Here are some things to think about before you take your watercraft out:

Watercraft Safety

  • Follow all safety rules. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 75% of reported water fatalities in 2014 happened on boats where the driver had not received boating safety training.
  • Be aware of weather conditions.
  • Have operable boat lights. Always test boat lights before the boat leaves the dock and carry extra batteries.
  • Never allow passengers to ride on gunwales, seatbacks, or outside of protective railings, including the front of a pontoon boat. A sudden turn, stop, or start could cause a fall overboard.
  • Follow speed laws around houseboats and docks.
  • Know your boat’s capacity and how to properly load it. An overloaded or improperly loaded boat can cause safety problems.
  • Have a working marine radio on board at all times and know how to use it.
  • Ventilate after fueling. Open the hatches, run the blower, and check for fuel fumes before starting the engine.
  • Infants and young children are at a higher risk for hypothermia, so if you are taking a baby on a boat, just take a few extra precautions to keep your baby warm.

Boat or Marine insurance is available for small boats, yachts, high performance powerboats, live-aboard houseboats, catamarans, and pontoons. Marine insurance will cover intended use including personal recreation, commercial, or charter vessels.

Call us today, and have a great time on the water!

Planning a Safe Family Vacation

holiday-389978_640Planning a Safe Family Vacation

We all want our family vacations to go perfectly, but even with the best intentions, things can happen.  Ticket mishaps, delays, schedule changes, auto accidents, and more can cause your vacation to be ruined. Your personal insurance program can be expanded to include travel and accident insurance. Call our office for a free review.

Vacation Pre-Planning

A little work in advance can help reduce the likelihood of bad things happening on your vacation.  Here are some things to consider before you leave home:

  • Make sure all your insurance is paid and up to date.  Having your auto insurance lapse due to non-payment would not be a good thing while you are driving to Disneyworld.
  • Do not take all your credit cards with you.  Take only the ones you will need.
  • Create an itinerary of where you are planning to be and on what date. Give this to a neighbor or relative.
  • Make copies of passports if traveling out of the country. Give a copy to a relative or friend.
  • Never wear anything that projects affluence (i.e. gold chains, expensive watches, rings, high-end luggage, or other paraphernalia).  It is best to leave your expensive jewelry at home.
  • Never put your home address on your luggage tags. Write your phone number instead.
  • Wait until you get home to post your vacation pictures on social media. Facebook is a goldmine for burglars.
  • Always lock your car, and never leave anything of value inside.
  • Do not use wireless networks in cafes or coffee shops.
  • Be aware of animals.  In some foreign countries, people will place a monkey on your shoulder and make you to pay to get it off!
  • You will need special auto insurance if you plan to drive into Mexico.
  • Separate your money so your spouse has a portion and you keep a portion.
  • Do you really want your first motorcycle ride to be in Mexico? Do not rent equipment or vehicles with which you are not familiar.

We offer commercial and personal insurance to ensure that you are protected from catastrophe.  Our staff is dedicated to providing all of our clients with complete coverage at the best rates our companies can offer.  Our years of experience and education allow us to guide our clients in making well-informed decisions regarding their insurance needs.

The Risks of Owning a Swimming Pool

freedfcv5

Summer is here and many of us are enjoying our backyard swimming pool.  It is good to remember that owning a pool not only has liability risks, but there are property risks as well. However, most important is keeping your friends and family safe, so here are a few pool safety reminders.

It is also important to have a personal insurance review to make sure all your summer activities are covered.  For example, if you have purchased a boat, you may need a separate watercraft policy.  In addition, if you have installed a pool you will need to add that risk to your homeowner’s policy.  We want you to have an enjoyable and safe summer, so here are some reminders about summertime safety

Property Risks and Pools

Some insurance companies consider a pool to be an external structure, and it may not be covered under your personal property.  If that is the case, your pool needs to be declared and listed on the policy, just like a shed or any other extraneous structure.

  • Pumps and related equipment can be damaged. Make sure your homeowner’s policy will cover this kind of equipment, including equipment failure
  • Water damage to the pool. Unless the damage is a result of a covered event, there is no coverage for cracks in the pool and related walkways.
  • Falling objects like trees may be covered.
  • Faulty workmanship is not covered under a homeowner’s policy. If you have a contractor working on your pool, make sure they have the proper insurance.
  • Are your pool cage supports or screening covered? They can be but it depends on your homeowners insurer.
